Monitoring of medium-sized and large mammals

Monitoring of medium-sized and large mammals

FUNDECOR established a monitoring system with the goal of assessing the diversity of medium and large mammal communities on farms under forest management. These farms hold the "Well-Managed Forest Group" certification granted by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC). Camera traps are placed using a systematic distribution, aiming to form a grid that covers most of the

property. Eight to 10 camera traps are installed per property and placed at a height of approximately 50 cm from the ground; monitoring is carried out over a 15-day period on properties mostly located within protected wild areas and biological corridors.

In collaboration with ICOMVIS, monitoring of small mammals (rats) was conducted among several FUNDECOR client families with the goal of assessing forest fragmentation, as these mammals are critical indicators that reflect ecosystem balance; at the same time, they are excellent seed dispersers.
