The primary objective of the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) project in the forest protection modality is to conserve areas of natural forest, preventing land-use change and promoting their permanence over time.
This scheme incentivizes landowners to maintain their forests, recognizing the environmental benefits they generate, such as water resource protection, carbon capture, and biodiversity conservation.
Within the framework of the project, technical support is provided to beneficiaries to ensure compliance with the commitments made, including periodic monitoring of the areas, boundary demarcation, and the prevention of activities that could affect forest cover.
Therefore, the maintenance of appropriate conditions on the land is encouraged, such as access control,
signage, surveillance, and forest fire protection.
In this way, the project not only contributes to forest conservation but also generates an economic benefit for owners, favoring long-term protection.
This model remains available to landowners interested in conserving their forests and the ecosystem services they provide in exchange for an economic benefit.
The project is being carried out within FUNDECOR's area of influence, in the Central, North Caribbean, South Caribbean, and Northern regions of Costa Rica.
The project can be carried out in different regions of the country, depending on the eligibility of the farms and the program guidelines.
